Description

3rd in series of 6 still lifes. This time using the style of Kate Breakey, an Australian artist whose work usually focuses on dead animals and flowers, but in a delicate and beautiful way. Her method is to take a (b & w) photograph of the subject, then paint over it with oil paints and pastels. This way there are photo elements such as focal points and depth of field but combined with more painterly textures. Its this marrying of styles that challenges expectations and raises the impact of the image. Carl knows what I'm talking about. I followed the style using oil paints, the only real difference being that I was painting onto a black and white photocopy of the photo rather than a silver gelatin photo like Kate uses, but that was because I'm impoverished. I like it quite a bit.. do you? I always make sure to mention to people the style 'cos otherwise it makes me look like I can paint better than I actually can. Have you heard of a band called Howling Bells? They soung great, particularly a song called Low Happening.. great stuff

Again with the resolution D:

I like the usage of light, but I have to say I'm not terribly impressed with Ms. Breakey's "technique." It looks good, but I think a truly artistic manipulation of light and form could really make it stand out as opposed to the transposing of paint onto a photograph.
